White Storks are a summer visitor to much of central and southern Europe They winter south of the Sahara and records in the UK are typically of overshooting migrants. The multiple occurrences of groups of three birds are intriguing. A small breeding population is established in Normandy and this may well be the source of some of the birds seen in Guernsey.

1956: 1 on 16th April

1979: 3 at the Sanatorium on 13th and 14th April

1979: 1 at La Ramee on 18th April

1979: 1 at La Jaonneuse on 15th June

1990: 1 originally seen in Alderney on the 4th May and early on the 5th it was seen flying in over Grandes Rocques on the 5th May at 10.40am.It was seen over Herm on the following day.Sightings from Guernsey, Herm and Sark were reported until it was finally taken into care on the xxxx. It was later flown to Cherbourg and released.

1993: 3 coming in off the sea at Pulias on 1st August

1995: 1 at the Airport on the 9th May was still in the area on the following day

2000: 3 at the Fauxquets Valley on the 27th April had moved to the old Aerodrome at L'Eree on the 28th and were noted at various south coast sites on that day.

2001: 1 at Rue de la Ronde Cheminee between 31 March and 2nd April.

A scarce visitor to Alderney with over ten records involving 20 birds in the nineties including four at Mannez on the 24th June 1992. The higher numbers recorded are probably due to the closer proximity to the French mainland.
